Police Release Video of Fatal Shooting of 13-Year-Old

A Chaotic Scene: Utica Police Release Video of Fatal Shooting

What Happened?

On Friday, June 29, 2024, 13-year-old Nyah Mway was shot and killed by police in Utica, New York. The incident occurred when Utica police officers were conducting a pedestrian stop of two 13-year-old youths in connection with an armed robbery investigation. The teens matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and were in the same area at the same time.

During the stop, one of the teens, Nyah Mway, fled from the police and displayed what appeared to be a handgun. Body camera footage released by the Utica Police Department shows a chaotic scene. In the video, officers can be heard screaming "Gun!" to each other as they pursue Nyah. Officer Bryce Patterson tackles and punches Nyah, and as they wrestle on the ground, Officer Patrick Husnay, a six-year veteran of the department, opens fire, fatally shooting Nyah in the chest.

The replica handgun carried by Nyah closely resembled a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine and "in all aspects [was] a realistic-appearing firearm with GLOCK markings, signatures, detachable magazine, and serial numbers," according to Lieutenant Michael Curley, a police spokesperson. However, it fired only pellets or BBs.

The officers provided immediate first aid to Nyah, and he was taken to Wynn Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The shooting has sparked outrage in the community, particularly among members of the Karen ethnic minority, of which Nyah's family is a part. The police department is conducting an internal investigation, and the state attorney general has opened a case to determine if the shooting was justified.
